Geniuses Are Not Born—They Are Nurtured!

Every child has the ability to think critically, solve problems, and excel—when given the right opportunities and guidance. The key lies in developing cognitive skills like reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem-solving—essential abilities that help children not just in academics, but in life.

These cognitive abilities—especially problem solving, pattern recognition, and decision-making—are the exact skills evaluated in the CogAT.

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), developed by Riverside Insights, measures a child’s reasoning abilities across three batteries—verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal. Schools use CogAT test scores and Ability Profiles to understand each student's cognitive strengths and potential for gifted and talented programs.

The CogAT also includes question types like verbal analogies, verbal classification, number analogies, and number puzzles, which help pinpoint a student's reasoning skills.

What is CogAT? Why Does It Matter?

science activities for kids

What CogAT measures?

Students' ability to reason with spatial and figural content.

Includes picture classification, figure matrices, and paper folding tasks.

Nonverbal reasoning

Students' ability to reason about patterns and relations.

Covers number series, number puzzles, and number analogies to evaluate mathematical problem solving.

Quantitative reasoning

Students' ability to use search, retrieval, and comparison processes.

Measures sentence completion, verbal analogies, and verbal classification skills.

Verbal reasoning:

How is the CogAT used by Schools?

  • To tailor instruction to match how students learn

  • To consider students for enrichment / GIFTED programs

  • To uncover gaps between student achievement and ability

  • To determine instructional strategies

  • To help teachers or other school staff make student placement decisions for gifted education programs

  • Schools often rely on the student's Ability Profile to understand learning patterns across different grade levels.

Gifted or Just Getting Started? Take the CogAT Challenge!

CogAT Test Scores

The CogAT is scored using a normalized standard score (USS) that follows a consistent scale from kindergarten through 12th grade.
